Why Flea and Tick Prevention Matters for Dogs and Cats

Why Flea and Tick Prevention Matters for Dogs and Cats

    More than an itch

Flea bites can cause flea allergy dermatitis, an allergic skin reaction. Ticks can transmit infections. Those risks are why flea and tick prevention deserves a place in a conversation about your pet’s care. They do not mean that every itchy pet has fleas or that one product suits every animal.

An indoor home does not rule out fleas

The FDA notes that fleas can live inside a warm home year-round. Keeping a pet indoors therefore does not remove every possible exposure. Ask your veterinarian what prevention makes sense for your pet’s living conditions and health.

Choose for the pet, not just the brand

The FDA recommends selecting a product with your veterinarian and checking that its label matches the pet’s species, life stage and weight. A product intended for dogs must not be used on cats. Bring the names of medicines or parasite products your pet already receives so the veterinarian can consider them.

Ask about the options at Vaccine Vets

Vaccine Vets lists NexGard for dogs and NexGard COMBO for cats among its flea and tick options. Ask the clinic team about availability for the visit you are planning.

Both products carry manufacturer cautions for pets with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders. Discuss your pet’s health history with your veterinarian, read the current manufacturer information linked below, and follow the prescribed product’s label.
